By school year 2006-2007, all school districts participating in the federal school meal programs shall establish a local school wellness policy.
 ---Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004

Healthy Kids = Successful Students

Research shows a strong link between children’s health and academic performance.  Healthy eating habits can help improve attendance, energy levels, classroom participation, school behavior, test scores, and academic success. Children who are fit and nutritionally healthy are ready to learn.  By supporting healthy eating and regular physical activity schools can improve student performance and achievement.

Be Active in the Development of
Your School District Wellness Policy

The Texas Action for Healthy Kids Alliance (TAHKA), and the Texas PTA are working together to assist schools in developing and implementing effective school wellness policies to ensure healthy school nutrition and physical activity environments.

WHY the Focus on Local Wellness Policies in Schools?

*      Poor diet and physical inactivity impacts growth and development and puts children at risk for developing obesity, type 2 diabetes, asthma, high blood pressure, certain cancers, and other diet related chronic disease

*    Unhealthy children are less likely to achieve academic success

WHAT Does the Law Require?

*      Schools must develop a local wellness policy involving parents, students, a representative from your school food authority and school board, school administrators, and the public.

*      The policy must include:

*      goals for nutrition education, physical activity, and other school-based activities to promote student wellness,

*      nutrition guidelines for all foods available on the school campus,

*      guidelines for school meals that comply with or exceed those set by the Secretary of Agriculture, and

*      an implementation, monitoring, and evaluation plan, including designation of operational responsibility.

Local wellness policies must be board approved
prior to the start of the 2006-2007 school year.
