By school year 2006-2007, all school
districts participating in the federal school meal programs shall establish a
local school wellness policy.

Research shows a strong link between children’s health and academic performance. Healthy eating habits can help improve attendance, energy levels, classroom participation, school behavior, test scores, and academic success. Children who are fit and nutritionally healthy are ready to learn. By supporting healthy eating and regular physical activity schools can improve student performance and achievement.

The Texas Action for Healthy Kids Alliance (TAHKA), and the Texas PTA are working together to assist schools in developing and implementing effective school wellness policies to ensure healthy school nutrition and physical activity environments.
goals for nutrition education, physical activity, and other school-based activities to promote student wellness,
nutrition guidelines for all foods available on the school campus,
guidelines for school meals that comply with or exceed those set by the Secretary of Agriculture, and
an implementation, monitoring, and evaluation plan, including designation of operational responsibility.
Local
wellness policies must be board approved
prior to the start of the 2006-2007 school
year.
